Today is the last day of the rest of your life

Last night, on the drive home, my wife was being unusually quiet.  I have come to the conclusion that this is her PMS mode.  She starts feeling somewhat depressed over her children being separated due to her divorce.  I have learned to make a mental note of the date and when her demeanour switches to this mode I am more or less prepared.  This month in particular there has been more silence than usual, she just goes in her shell and really is in no mood for conversation.  Rather than prod her like I used to (which was a source of frustration for me), I leave her alone.  Better that just one of us be moody.

As we drove home, about 35 minutes, I started to think about something I had written in my web site at one time and wondered….

How would you react, what would you do if you found out that the next 24 hours would be the last of your life?  Would she spend hers (or even a portion of the time) moping and brooding on the bad luck or circumstance that has befallen her?  The same “bad luck” that is there the other 21 days of the month but seems to have less emotional significance.

What would YOU do?

Would you spend the next 24 hours wondering what went wrong and how you can fix it, knowing that it can’t be fixed anyways?

Would you spend the next 24 hours trying to get your will in order, itemizing everything that you own and give them to your loved ones, in other words getting your affairs in order?

Would you spend the next 24 hours in bed, making love with your loved one, or one (or more) of the many lovers that you have had?

Would you spend the next 24 hours drinking, smoking, toking or trying all the drugs in the market that you were afraid would kill you?

Would you spend the next 24 hours trying to make a major positive change in someone’s life?

Would you have a really nice “last” supper?

Would you go to Church and ask forgiveness for your sins?

Or

Would you spend the rest of your life having meaningful moments with yourself and the people around you?

My point is that we as people tend to waste a lot of valuable time thinking, worrying, missing, and hoping for things that cannot be changed or “should” not be changed.  If we knew that our time was limited I don’t think we would be as “wasteful” when it came to our valuable time.  We cannot reuse or recycle our time but we can reduce the amount of time we waste on trivial points that are not in any way changed by the mental stress we endure by thinking ad naseum about same.

Our time is valuable, time is finite, time is precious and it waits for no one.

What would YOU do?
